Renew is Renault's marketplace for buying and selling used vehicles.

The platform brings together vehicle listings, trade-in valuation, comparison tools and financing information, helping users manage the entire decision-making journey in one place.

My work focused primarily on two key experiences:

  • Vehicle valuation
  • Vehicle comparison

Although they serve different purposes, both shared the same design challenge:

Users knew what they wanted to achieve, but they didn't always know where they were in the process.

01

Understanding the challenge

Buying or selling a used car isn't something people do every day.

Because of that, users expect the product to guide them through the journey.

The existing flows contained too many steps, some questions lacked context, and users had very little sense of progress.

My goal wasn't simply to reduce the number of screens.

It was to make every remaining step feel meaningful and easy to understand.

02

Rethinking vehicle valuation

Vehicle valuation plays an important role for both users and the business.

Users want a realistic estimate of their car's value before contacting a dealership.

For Renault, it's the starting point of a potential sales opportunity.

The original experience contained ten steps.

After reviewing the flow, I simplified the journey by removing unnecessary friction.

Later, I intentionally added back a small number of steps for damage assessment and optional equipment because they genuinely improved the quality of the valuation.

Rather than chasing the smallest possible flow, I focused on making every step clear, purposeful and easy to follow.

Visible progress indicators and better contextual guidance helped users understand both where they were and what would happen next.

03

Making comparison easier to understand

The comparison feature revealed a different problem.

Users often couldn't tell which vehicles they had already selected, making the next action less obvious.

I redesigned the experience by giving selected vehicles a much stronger visual presence, while empty comparison slots encouraged users to add another vehicle.

Once two cars were selected, a persistent comparison bar appeared automatically, making the next step immediately visible.

Instead of asking users to remember what they'd done, the interface kept them informed throughout the process.

04

Designing for confidence

Across both experiences, the design objective remained consistent.

Reduce uncertainty.

Increase clarity.

Help users feel in control of their decisions.

Through clearer progress, better visual feedback and more transparent interactions, the product became easier to understand without becoming simpler than it needed to be.

05

Outcome

Working on Renew reinforced an important lesson.

Good UX isn't always about removing steps.

Sometimes it's about making every step feel intentional.

By improving clarity rather than simply reducing complexity, the buying and selling journey became more predictable, more transparent and easier to complete.

06

What I learned

This project taught me that people don't only want speed — they want confidence.

Especially when making financial decisions, understanding where they are in a process is just as important as completing it quickly.

Sometimes the most valuable design decision isn't adding something new — it's removing uncertainty.
